G999 odds: what 1.8 means on a stake

Decimal odds are a multiplier applied to the stake when the stated selection wins. The figure returned includes the stake; profit is what remains after subtracting it.

Multiply for gross return
For a hypothetical 15-unit stake at decimal odds 1.8, 15 × 1.8 = 27 units. That is the gross return if the selection wins under its terms. It is not 27 units of profit; the original 15 is included.
Net gain is 27 − 15 = 12 units. Separating these numbers avoids counting the stake twice. If the selection loses in this simple single-bet example, return is zero and net change is minus 15.
Odds are not a guarantee
The arithmetic answers 'what would be returned if it wins', not 'will it win'. A larger decimal number means a larger conditional gross return for the same stake, but does not certify the chance of the event or a reliable forecast.
If 15 units were placed at 2.2 instead, the hypothetical gross return would be 33 and net gain 18. Both calculations still depend on the selection winning and on the relevant rules being met.
Read the settlement question
An odds figure belongs to a named event and outcome period. A match result, a half-time result and a qualification result can differ even when displayed beside the same fixture. The selection wording identifies which one the arithmetic would apply to.

Questions about games
Is 27 the profit from 15 at 1.8?
No. Twenty-seven is gross return including the 15 stake; the net gain is 12 if the selection wins.
What happens if that simple selection loses?
The gross return is zero and the net change is minus the 15-unit stake.
Do decimal odds tell me the event will happen?
No. They specify a conditional return under the selection's terms, not a guaranteed result.
